Event Details

Join us for a Bioblitz to discover all the weird and wonderful species of animals and plants that live in Portage! A Bioblitz is a hands-on, family-friendly outdoor activity that empowers people of all ages and backgrounds to collect information about local plants and wildlife. Using handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets -- and the community science app iNaturalist -- you can help scientists better track and study our natural world by observing and counting bugs, birds, flowers, and other wildlife in your local park, garden, or other wild space. We will be exploring the areas around the library. Event attendees will make photo observations, which are instantly uploaded into the iNaturalist global database. This data is used by conservationists and researchers who study species health and biodiversity. Participants can see real time leaderboard results for number of species, number of observations, and join regional challenges. You can stay for the entire event or just a portion of it. Please bring a phone or device to capture your observations. Downloading the iNaturalist app before the event will be very helpful. This is an All Ages Activity! Refreshments will be provided.

Event Type(s): STEAM, All Adult Programs, Family
