When Harold Hill, a traveling con man, arrives in River City, he convinces the locals to start a band by purchasing his uniforms and instruments. He intends to flee as soon as he receives the money. Librarian Marian Paroo suspects Harold is a fraud but holds her tongue since her moody brother, Winthrop, is excited about the band. As Harold develops feelings for Marian, he faces a difficult decision about skipping town.

Starring Robert Preston, who reprises the title from the stage version, and starring Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Ronny Howard, and Paul Ford. It won the Academy Award for Best Music. It also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy.
